Hydrocephalus Surgery: Restoring Brain Health with Precision and Care
Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain, leading to increased pressure that can cause damage to brain tissue. Hydrocephalus surgery is a specialized procedure aimed at alleviating this pressure and restoring normal CSF flow to improve the patient's neurological function and quality of life.
Understanding Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus can occur at any age and may result from various causes, including congenital malformations, infections, bleeding in the brain, or tumors obstructing CSF flow. Symptoms can include headaches, nausea, vision problems, and cognitive impairment.
Surgical Treatment Options
Shunt Placement: The most common treatment for hydrocephalus involves surgically implanting a shunt system. This system consists of a flexible tube (shunt) that diverts excess CSF from the brain to another part of the body where it can be absorbed, typically the abdominal cavity viz., Ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. Shunts may have a valve to regulate the flow of CSF and prevent over-drainage. Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV): In select cases, particularly in older children and adults with certain types of hydrocephalus, an ETV procedure may be performed. This technique creates a new pathway for CSF to bypass the obstruction, promoting natural drainage and reducing the need for a shunt.
